Public Consultation on the ECV Requirements

GCOS held a public consultation from 13 January to 13 March 2020 on the requirements for global essential climate observations needed by users of climate data (called Essential Climate Variables, ECV). This public consultation addressed not only the observation community, but all communities that work with climate data including climate science, modelling, policy, adaptation, mitigation.

These GCOS ECV requirements have guided the development of in-situ and satellite global climate observations by all national meteorological services and space agencies and other oceanic and terrestrial networks. This revision will guide the next generation of global climate observations.
