The third session of the Commission for Observation, Infrastructure and Information System (INFCOM-3) was held on 15 to 19 April 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Among the significant outcomes, the draft decision 9.1/(1) - "Relation with the United Nations and other partner organizations" was approved. This decision marks a milestone in fostering collaboration and synergy among global partners.
Throughout the INFCOM-3, the pivotal role of GCOS in advancing the following objectives was underscored :
- GCOS role in identifying and detecting climate change,
- GCOS role in broadening and understanding the various hydrological variables and the water budget,
- GCOS role in advocating and supporting climate data sharing
Thelma Krug, the GCOS Steering Committee Chair, provided a comprehensive overview of the GCOS program's initiatives an achievements during the session dedicated to agenda item 9. Thelma Krug underscored the collaborative efforts between GCOS and INFCOM, emphasizing their shared commitment to enhancing Earth observation capabilities.
The measures approved by INFCOM to enhance Earth observation systems in response to the evolving technological and societal changes are set to bring positive effects in the future, promising good outcomes for Earth observation system. Aligned with core priorities such as the Early Warnings for All initiative, these efforts aim to strengthen WMO's Infrastructure while mitigating critical gaps in climate observation networks.
